  1. Act introduced by Henry VIII in England in
  2. 1539 to settle disputes over dogma in the
  3. English Church. The articles affirmed belief
  4. in transubstantiation, communion in one kind
  5. only, auricular confession, monastic vows,
  6. celibacy of the clergy, and private masses;
  7. those who rejected transubstantiation were to
  8. be burned at the stake. The act was repealed
  9. in 1547, replaced by 42 articles in 1551, and
  10. by an act of Thirty-Nine Articles in 1571.
